Apple iPhone 15: Is it Worth the $800 Price Tag?

Design & Build Quality

There is a new dynamic island in the iPhone 15. It replaces the typical notch in base model iPhones. Dynamic Island makes the look of iPhone 15 like Pro models. The look and design are so similar to iPhone 14 that you won’t notice the difference. But there are some improvements in the feel of the phone. It is still a boxy-shaped phone with rounded corners. But the corners are softer now. There is also a new frosted glass back. Frosted glass is so smooth and it catches fewer fingerprints. These changes are subtle and feel overall good in the hand.

Display

iPhone 15 has a 6.1-inch display. It is a Super Retina XDR OLED display with HDR 10 support. This display has a peak brightness of 2000 nits. So outdoor performance is excellent. But It is a 60Hz display, which isn’t good especially considering the price. But most people didn’t care about the refresh rate of the iPhone 15. Everyone is not going to pay attention to display smoothness. 120Hz is called Pro-Motion, they gave it only to the Pro phones. This will separate the regular iPhone 15 from the Pro models. The phone can connect to monitors for gaming with a PS5 controller via Bluetooth. Overall it is a brighter display with a low refresh rate and a much higher price. Which made the iPhone 15 the most expensive 60Hz phone.

Camera

iPhone 15 has been upgraded to a new set of 48MP main camera and 12MP ultrawide. The main camera is slightly smaller than the Pro phones. It has a larger max aperture of F1.6. They are taking 24MP shots by default. The shots are well-detailed. They are slightly better than last year’s 14 Pro. The new auto-portrait Mode detection feature is amazing. You don’t have to switch to portrait mode anymore. You can go to your gallery and make any photo of yours into a portrait mode photo. For selfies, we are getting a 12 MP camera. 4K up to 60fps, 1080p up to 20fps Front video camera. It is a good camera for most people. They are taking significantly better photos than the iPhone 14.

Performance & OS

This year the Pro phones got a brand new A17 Pro chip. But this iPhone 15 gets last year’s A16 Bionic from the 14 Pro. A16 Bionic is more than good enough for a phone of this price. It can handle regular tasks smoothly. Overall raw performance is great in this phone. It can handle gaming excellently because of the horsepower in this chip. They added an ultra-wideband chip so that you can find your phone more easily with an Apple Watch. Their background noise isolation is good. It worked surprisingly well. They have the rest of the iOS 17 features too. Overall it is a good-performing phone with great software.

Battery & Charging

The battery life of this phone has been pretty good. Apple has officially addressed the heat and battery issues that some people have. After some updates, they almost fixed it. It has a 3349 mAh battery. Battery life of this phone is better than the iPhone 14 Pro. Because of the 60Hz and Apple optimization, it is a battery champ. Now it has a USB Type-C 2.0 for charging. PD 2.0 supported, they advertised a 50% charge in 30 minutes. A wireless charge is up to 15W with MagSafe. Since it is a PD 2.0 there are no USB 3 data speeds because of the older chip. So there is no USB 3 controller support.

Conclusion

The price of the new iPhones is unchanged. They are better at that price compared to last year. If you have an iPhone 14 or 13 you don’t need to buy an iPhone 15. But if you have an older iPhone then you should get iPhone 15. It is a better phone in every way. The cameras are good, the old Type-C to the new iPhone 15 is awesome, and a brighter Display makes it a complete 800$ iPhone.
